Political turmoil in Nepal: Amidst the fall of the government, K.P. Sharma Oli is set to become the Prime Minister again

INVC NEWS
Kathmandu : The Nepal’s political landscape is witnessing seismic shifts as Pushpa Kamal Dahal, the incumbent Prime Minister, has tendered his resignation, paving the way for K.P. Sharma Oli to assume office once more. This development comes after the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) withdrew its support from the government, leading to a parliamentary vote that saw 194 members of the 275-seat House of Representatives (HoR) express no confidence in Dahal, with only 63 supporting him. A minimum of 138 votes was required to secure the vote of confidence.

The Political Maneuvering and Alliances

Just last week, CPN-UML, led by former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, had withdrawn its support from the Dahal-led government. Oli, along with leaders from the Nepali Congress (NC), deliberated on forming a new coalition government ahead of the scheduled power test on Friday. Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba had already pledged his support for Oli as the next Prime Minister.

In the HoR, Nepali Congress holds 89 seats, while CPN-UML commands 78 seats. Together, their coalition would sum up to 167 seats, comfortably exceeding the required 138-seat majority threshold needed to form a government. However, in the lower house, CPN-UML holds a mere 32 seats against the required 138-seat majority for Prachanda’s party.

Oli’s Path Back to Power

Oli emphasized the necessity of political stability and national development amidst the ongoing challenges faced by Nepal. According to the terms of the agreement, Oli and Deuba are slated to alternate as Prime Ministers over a three-year period. With Prachanda failing to secure a vote of confidence, Oli could potentially be appointed Prime Minister on Saturday, followed by his swearing-in ceremony on Sunday, accompanied by a commitment to confidentiality.

In the party’s headquarters, Oli stated that the formation of a coalition government between two major political parties was essential for Nepal’s progress. Meanwhile, the current Prime Minister accused Oli of betraying him without reason.

The political scenario in Nepal is rapidly evolving, with K.P. Sharma Oli poised to return to power following Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s resignation. The dynamics of coalition-building and parliamentary vote of confidence underscore the intricate nature of Nepali politics. As the nation awaits the outcome of subsequent parliamentary procedures, the path forward for Nepal’s governance and stability remains pivotal.
