“Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues his Asia tour with a visit to Singapore after a historic trip to Brunei. Meetings with top leaders and engagements with the business community are on the agenda.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to continue his diplomatic tour with a visit to Singapore following his trip to Brunei. During his stay in Singapore, he will meet with prominent figures including President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and former Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong. Additionally, PM Modi will engage with leaders from Singapore’s business community.
In Brunei, Modi’s visit marks a historic first as he is the first Indian Prime Minister to undertake a bilateral visit to the country. His arrival in Brunei on Tuesday was met with a warm welcome, including a ‘Guard of Honor’ and a reception by Prince Al-Muhtadi Billah. Modi’s visit to Brunei includes significant engagements such as a visit to the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, inaugurated by the father of the current Sultan, and the opening of a new ‘Chancery’ complex at the Indian High Commission. Modi also took the opportunity to interact with the Indian diaspora, highlighting their role in fostering bilateral relations between India and Brunei.
The Indian community in Brunei, which began its presence in the 1920s with the discovery of oil, now consists of around 14,000 members.
