Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Manipur on Saturday, marking his first tour of the state after last year’s ethnic violence. During the visit, he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of projects worth ₹8,500 crore spread across Churachandpur and Imphal.
₹7,300 Crore Projects to Begin, ₹1,200 Crore Projects to be Inaugurated
According to Manipur Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goyal, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone of projects worth ₹7,300 crore in Churachandpur and inaugurate development works worth ₹1,200 crore. The initiatives aim to boost infrastructure, peace, and sustainable development in the state. PM Modi will also interact with displaced families affected by last year’s unrest.
Security Tightened in Imphal and Churachandpur
Security has been placed on high alert ahead of the Prime Minister’s arrival. Troops have been deployed around Kangla Fort in Imphal, spread across 237 acres, as well as the Peace Ground in Churachandpur, where a massive public meeting is planned. Kangla Fort, a historic symbol of Manipuri heritage, is being guarded with round-the-clock inspections, sniffer dogs, and advanced surveillance equipment.
Sniffer Dogs, Checkpoints, and Tight Vigil
Central and state forces are conducting joint inspections around Kangla Fort and sensitive areas. Boats from the State Disaster Management Force are patrolling trenches, while paramilitary forces have created checkpoints in valley and hill districts to curb the movement of miscreants. Tourists have been restricted from entering Kangla Fort until the Prime Minister’s visit concludes.
Clashes in Churachandpur Ahead of Visit
Tension broke out in Kuki-dominated Churachandpur district on Thursday evening, just days before the Prime Minister’s arrival. Miscreants tore banners, broke barricades at Pearsonmun village and Filian Bazar, and set fire to cutouts prepared for the event. They also pelted stones at security forces before fleeing. Officials confirmed that flag marches and patrolling by paramilitary forces are being carried out to maintain order.
Cordon at Peace Ground, Barricades on Key Routes
A tight cordon has been placed around Peace Ground in Churachandpur, where PM Modi is expected to address the public. Police and paramilitary forces have sealed several roads and are conducting search operations in border and sensitive districts. The CRPF has also set up temporary checkpoints to prevent anti-social activities.
PM Modi’s Manipur visit holds massive importance, not only for announcing development projects worth ₹8,500 crore but also for signaling a push towards stability, peace, and long-term growth in the violence-hit state.
