“Every Indian is outraged by this attack,” says PM Modi
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote:
“Spoke to the Chief Justice of India, Justice BR Gavai ji. The attack on him in the Supreme Court premises this morning has outraged every Indian. There is no place for such reprehensible acts in our society. This is highly condemnable. I commend Justice Gavai for his patience in such a situation. It reflects his commitment to the values of justice and to strengthening the spirit of our Constitution.”
The Prime Minister’s message comes amid widespread outrage over the attempted attack, which has been condemned across the political spectrum.
Bar Council Bars Advocate Rakesh Kishore
Following the incident, the Bar Council of India (BCI) has suspended lawyer Rakesh Kishore from practicing in any court with immediate effect. Kishore allegedly attempted to throw a shoe at Chief Justice Gavai while the bench comprising CJI Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran was hearing a case.
According to reports, the shoe missed its target, and security personnel immediately restrained and escorted the lawyer out of the courtroom. As he was being taken away, Kishore reportedly shouted that he would not tolerate “the insult to Sanatan Dharma.”
Nationwide Reactions: “Attack on Constitution,” Says Sonia Gandhi
The incident has triggered a wave of criticism from political leaders across the country.

“The attack on Chief Justice of India BR Gavai is not only an attack on him but also on the Constitution of India. No words are enough to condemn this act. Chief Justice Gavai has shown remarkable composure, and the entire nation must stand in solidarity with him.”
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and several other opposition leaders also condemned the incident, calling it a “serious assault on the dignity of the judiciary.”
Security Tightened at Supreme Court Premises
Following the attempted assault, security measures inside and around the Supreme Court have been tightened. The Delhi Police and court administration are reviewing security protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
The judiciary and the political establishment have unanimously called for upholding respect for constitutional institutions and ensuring that differences are expressed within the framework of law and civility.
