Singapore : Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with H.E. Mr. Lawrence Wong, Prime Minister of Singapore, to discuss and strengthen the bilateral relations between India and Singapore. The meeting took place at the Parliament House in Singapore, where PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome.
During their discussions, both leaders reviewed the robust economic, defense, and technological ties between the two nations and decided to elevate the relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This new partnership aims to enhance economic cooperation, aligning with India’s Act East Policy, and expand trade and investment, particularly noting Singapore’s substantial investment of around USD 160 billion in India.
Key areas of focus in their talks included defense, maritime security, education, artificial intelligence, fintech, science and technology, and knowledge sharing. Connectivity and people-to-people relations were also highlighted, along with progress in green corridor projects.
The leaders reviewed outcomes from the 2nd India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable held in August 2024, which identified pillars of cooperation such as Advanced Manufacturing, Digitalization, Healthcare, Skills Development, and Sustainability. Specific emphasis was placed on cooperation in semiconductors and critical emerging technologies, marking a significant step forward in making the relationship future-oriented.
Cultural ties were also recognized, with PM Modi announcing the opening of India’s first Thiruvalluvar Cultural Centre in Singapore, further enriching the 60th-anniversary celebrations of bilateral relations in 2025. They exchanged views on global and regional matters, including India-ASEAN relations and the Indo-Pacific vision.
Both Prime Ministers witnessed the signing of several MoUs related to Semiconductors, Digital Technologies, Skill Development, and Healthcare, as part of the outcomes from the Ministerial Roundtables. PM Modi extended an invitation for PM Wong to visit India, which was accepted.
