Passenger Vehicle Sales Down 9% in August; Two-Wheelers, Scooters, and Exports Show Growth

Passenger Vehicle Sales Decline in August

Passenger vehicle sales in India fell 9% year-on-year to 3,21,840 units in August 2025, compared to 3,52,921 units sold in August 2024, according to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

The decline is attributed to weak demand as many customers postponed purchases in anticipation of GST rate cuts and possible vehicle price reductions.

🏍️ Two-Wheeler & Scooter Segment Sees Strong Growth

While car sales slowed, two-wheeler sales jumped 7% to 18,33,921 units in August, up from 17,11,662 units a year earlier.

  • Scooter sales rose 13%, reaching 6,83,397 units.

  • Three-wheeler sales increased 8% to 75,759 units.

📦 Exports Record Robust Growth

India’s automobile exports showed strong performance in August 2025:

  • Passenger vehicle exports rose 24.6% to 82,246 units.

  • Car exports increased 24% to 43,650 units.

  • Two-wheeler exports surged 27.6% to 4,32,033 units.

  • Three-wheeler exports grew 48.1% to 42,765 units.

📌 Expert Take

SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon explained that the dip in passenger vehicle sales was mainly due to delayed buying behavior, as customers expected lower prices after a potential GST reduction.

However, the continued rise in two-wheeler demand and export performance reflects resilience in the Indian auto industry.
