New Delhi : Shani Dev is revered as the deity of justice in Hindu mythology. According to ancient scriptures, he holds a significant position as the dispenser of justice, rewarding individuals based on their deeds. This makes Shani Dev a crucial figure in the religious practices of many devotees.

The Significance of Saturdays in Shani Dev Worship

Saturdays are considered particularly auspicious for worshipping Shani Dev. Devotees perform various rituals on this day to mitigate the malefic effects of Shani and to seek his blessings. Among these rituals, offering oil to Shani Dev is one of the most widely practiced traditions.

The Ancient Tradition of Offering Oil

The practice of offering oil to Shani Dev is deeply rooted in ancient beliefs. It is commonly held that this tradition helps in obtaining Shani Dev’s favor. However, according to a mythological story, the real reason behind this practice is to provide relief to Shani Dev from his pain. It is believed that when devotees offer oil, they become recipients of his blessings.

The Mythological Story of Shani Dev and Hanuman

There is a fascinating legend associated with Shani Dev and Lord Hanuman. When Shani’s adverse period began for Hanuman, he was engaged in the task of building the Ram Setu across the ocean. To protect the bridge from demons, Hanuman was given the responsibility of guarding it. Despite Shani Dev’s impending influence, Hanuman prioritized his duty to Lord Rama.

Shani Dev, understanding Hanuman’s immense strength and reputation, approached him and explained the necessity of his astrological influence. Hanuman, dedicated to his duty, requested Shani Dev to wait until his task was complete. However, Shani Dev did not relent and mounted Hanuman’s body.

In response, Hanuman began smashing his body against massive mountains. Shani Dev, suffering severe injuries, pleaded for forgiveness. Hanuman agreed to forgive him on the condition that Shani Dev would not trouble his devotees. Grateful, Shani Dev was given sesame oil by Hanuman, which soothed his pain. Since then, devotees offer sesame oil to Shani Dev as a gesture of devotion and relief.

Religious and Astrological Significance of Sesame Oil

The tradition of offering sesame oil to Shani Dev has both religious and astrological significance. According to religious beliefs, sesame seeds are considered sacred and are believed to originate from the dirt of Lord Vishnu’s body. Therefore, oil made from these seeds is deemed pure.

Astrologically, Shani’s associated metal is lead, also known as Nag Dhatu in Sanskrit. Lead is a toxic metal, and its association with Shani emphasizes the planet’s harsh and challenging influence. In contrast, Mars, represented by the metal iron, is known to counteract Shani’s negative effects.

Sesame oil, referred to as “sneha” in Sanskrit, has protective qualities. It prevents rusting of iron, symbolizing the neutralization of Shani’s adverse impact. Offering sesame oil to Shani Dev symbolizes the devotee’s surrender and the desire to pacify Shani’s influence.

The practice of offering oil to Shani Dev is a profound tradition with deep religious and astrological roots. It represents a blend of mythology, devotion, and symbolism, aimed at seeking relief from Shani’s challenges and obtaining his blessings. Understanding the significance behind this ritual allows devotees to perform it with greater faith and reverence, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling spiritual experience.
