INVC NEWS New Delhi — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued critical weather updates for various regions across the country, signaling heavy rains in the Northeast and an impending heat wave in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Over the next three to four days, the southwest monsoon is expected to advance significantly, bringing dynamic weather patterns and impactful climatic changes.

Southwest Monsoon Progress: Key Regions to Watch

Meteorologists forecast that the southwest monsoon will advance into the South Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin region, parts of South Bay of Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and central Bay of Bengal. This progression indicates an active monsoon phase, intensifying rainfall in multiple states.

Heavy Rain Alert Issued for Northeastern States

A heavy rainfall warning has been issued for the northeastern states including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, Sikkim, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. During May 14 to 17, some areas may receive rainfall exceeding 115 mm, with certain pockets experiencing up to 204 mm. This intense precipitation is linked to ongoing cyclonic circulations over Uttarakhand, East Bihar, North-East Assam, and the Andaman Sea, creating atmospheric instability.

Western Disturbance Brings Lightning and Showers to North India

The western disturbance continues to influence the weather in northern India, manifesting as a trough in the westerly winds at mid and upper levels of the atmosphere. Due to this, regions including Northwest India, eastern Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand can expect light to moderate rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds between 30 to 50 kmph from May 15 to 19.

Strong Winds and Light Rain Forecast in Western India

Western India will witness gusty winds ranging from 30 to 50 kmph alongside scattered light rains. States like Gujarat (May 15-16), Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada (May 14-17) will be affected. Notably, Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra may experience stormy winds reaching speeds up to 70 kmph on May 15, raising the potential for localized disturbances.

South India Faces Thunderstorms and Stormy Winds

The southern peninsula will encounter light to moderate rain with thunderstorms, impacting coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana, interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Kerala during May 14 to 17. Particularly in Telangana, storm winds of 50 to 60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph, are expected on May 14 and 15, accompanied by rainfall.

Heat Wave to Grip Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Parts of Jharkhand

While the Northeast braces for heavy rain, heat wave conditions are predicted to intensify over eastern Uttar Pradesh, western India, Gangetic plains in West Bengal, and parts of Jharkhand. This surge in temperature, driven by shifting weather patterns, signals a challenging period ahead, especially in regions already experiencing rising temperatures.

Rising Temperatures in Northwest India

In the Northwest region, the IMD reports a gradual increase in maximum temperatures by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius over the next three days. This temperature rise coincides with the retreat of the western disturbance, which has temporarily brought some respite through rains and cooler air.

Summary and Safety Recommendations

The upcoming days will witness contrasting weather phenomena across India: intense rains and cyclonic activity in the Northeast and South, combined with soaring temperatures and heat wave conditions in large parts of the North and East. Residents are advised to:

  • Stay alert to local weather warnings and updates.

  • Take precautions during heavy rainfall to avoid flood-prone areas.

  • Stay hydrated and avoid prolonged outdoor exposure in heat-affected zones.

  • Monitor agricultural and transport advisories, as weather impacts may disrupt daily activities.

India is currently navigating a complex phase in the 2025 monsoon season, with significant weather events shaping the climate dynamics over large regions. Keeping a close eye on evolving forecasts will be crucial for safety and preparedness.
