North India Boils Under Intense Heatwave: 21 Cities Cross 42°C Mark, IMD Issues Alert

New Delhi, April 8, 2025 — A brutal summer has gripped North India, with temperatures soaring past 42 degrees Celsius in more than 21 cities. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heatwave warnings for the upcoming days across key states including Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and parts of Himachal Pradesh, as the mercury continues to climb relentlessly.

🌡️ Delhi, Rajasthan, UP Among Worst Hit

In the national capital Delhi, the temperature surged to 38.2°C on Sunday — 3.1°C above average — and is expected to touch 40–42°C by April 8–9. A Yellow Alert has been issued urging people to avoid outdoor activities during peak hours.

In Rajasthan, heatwave conditions have turned severe, with Barmer emerging as the hottest city at a scorching 45.6°C. Other cities like Jaisalmer, Phalodi, Bikaner, and Churu also recorded extreme temperatures, intensifying the heat crisis.

🔥 IMD Forecast: Rising Heat, Widespread Alerts

According to the IMD, the heatwave will intensify further, with temperatures likely to rise by 2–4°C across northwestern and central India over the next five days. Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Chhattisgarh are also under watch.

“These are pre-monsoon heatwave conditions, and April is expected to remain hotter than normal,” said a senior IMD official.

🌎 Why This Heatwave Is a Global Concern

This sudden spike in temperatures comes amid growing concerns over climate change and global warming. The unusual heat pattern in South Asia could have ripple effects on agriculture, public health, and power demand.

Notably, the Western Disturbance system — which often brings brief respite to North India — has weakened, allowing hot and dry winds from the desert region to dominate.

🚨 IMD’s Advisory to Citizens

The IMD has urged citizens to:

  • Stay hydrated

  • Avoid going out between 12 PM to 4 PM

  • Wear light, cotton clothing

  • Use ORS or lemon-salt water to prevent heatstroke

Schools in parts of UP, Rajasthan, and MP have issued advisories or shortened school hours due to the intense heat.
