New Delhi : Indian Railways, the world’s largest transport network, is set to provide a significant gift to its passengers. With a keen focus on ensuring a comfortable and pleasant journey, the government and the Ministry of Railways are committed to offering every possible facility to travelers. In response to the rising demand, the ministry has devised an ambitious plan to manufacture 10,000 new non-AC coaches during the 2024-25 and 2025-26 periods. Additionally, more than 5,300 general coaches will be introduced to significantly enhance the capacity of its rolling stock. This grand gesture is aimed at delivering a substantial improvement in passenger amenities.

Railways’ Strategy to Introduce 10,000 Non-AC Coaches

A senior official from the Ministry of Railways disclosed plans to augment production to cater to this increasing demand. In the current fiscal year of 2024-25, 4,485 non-AC coaches will be rolled out, followed by an additional 5,444 coaches in 2025-26. This substantial increase is designed to ensure that passengers traveling in non-AC coaches have sufficient and improved facilities. By addressing varying passenger requirements and seasonal fluctuations, the railway aims to enhance comfort and availability. This strategy is poised to meet the common travelers’ needs more effectively by focusing on corridors with high demand, where special trains featuring a higher number of non-AC coaches will be operated.

Introduction of 2,600 General Coaches

As part of this ambitious initiative, Indian Railways is preparing to manufacture 2,605 general coaches in the current fiscal year. These will include specially designed Amrit Bharat general coaches, aimed at elevating passenger amenities. This includes the construction of non-AC sleeper coaches and 323 SLR (Sitting-cum-Luggage Rake) coaches, featuring Amrit Bharat coaches, 32 high-capacity parcel vans, and 55 pantry cars. The overall goal is to bolster the fleet with 2,710 general coaches, integrating Amrit Bharat general coaches renowned for their advanced facilities. This production target encompasses 1,910 non-AC sleeper coaches and 514 SLR coaches, ensuring that the needs of all passengers are met with enhanced services.

Enhanced Passenger Comfort and Safety

Indian Railways’ focus is not just on increasing the number of coaches but also on improving passenger comfort and safety. The new non-AC coaches will be equipped with modern amenities such as ergonomic seating, better ventilation, and improved sanitation facilities. Special attention is given to safety features, including reinforced coach structures and advanced braking systems. These improvements aim to offer a more secure and comfortable travel experience for all passengers.

Sustainable and Efficient Manufacturing

The plan to introduce 10,000 new non-AC coaches is also aligned with Indian Railways’ commitment to sustainability. The manufacturing process will incorporate eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient technologies. This not only reduces the environmental impact but also ensures that the coaches are more durable and require less maintenance. The use of advanced manufacturing techniques will streamline production, ensuring timely delivery and deployment of the new coaches.

Meeting Growing Passenger Demand

The introduction of additional non-AC coaches is a direct response to the growing demand from passengers. With the rise in the number of travelers opting for railways, there is a pressing need to expand capacity and improve service quality. The new coaches will alleviate overcrowding, especially in high-demand corridors, providing a more comfortable and convenient travel option for millions of passengers.

Focus on Affordability and Accessibility

By increasing the number of non-AC coaches, Indian Railways aims to make train travel more affordable and accessible. These coaches are primarily used by the general public, including daily commuters and long-distance travelers, who rely on railways for cost-effective transportation. The addition of new coaches will enhance the availability of seats, making travel more accessible for everyone.

Revamping Existing Coaches

In addition to manufacturing new coaches, Indian Railways is also focusing on revamping the existing fleet. Older coaches will be upgraded with modern amenities and safety features, ensuring that passengers enjoy a consistent and high-quality travel experience. This comprehensive approach to improving both new and existing coaches highlights the commitment of Indian Railways to passenger satisfaction.

Implementation and Future Plans

The implementation of this extensive plan is set to begin immediately, with a phased rollout over the next two years. Indian Railways will closely monitor the progress to ensure that all targets are met. Looking ahead, the Ministry of Railways has outlined future plans to continue expanding and upgrading the fleet, with a focus on sustainable growth and enhanced passenger experience. This long-term vision will ensure that Indian Railways remains a world leader in providing efficient and high-quality transportation services.

Impact on Regional Connectivity

The addition of new non-AC coaches will also have a positive impact on regional connectivity. By increasing the capacity of trains, Indian Railways will be able to introduce more routes and enhance the frequency of services, particularly in underserved regions. This will promote regional development, providing better access to education, employment, and healthcare for people in remote areas.

Boost to the Economy

The extensive manufacturing plan is expected to provide a significant boost to the economy. The production of new coaches will create numerous job opportunities in the manufacturing sector. Additionally, improved railway services will facilitate smoother movement of goods and people, enhancing overall economic productivity. The increased capacity and efficiency of Indian Railways will support the growth of industries, tourism, and commerce, contributing to the nation’s economic development.

Technological Innovations

Indian Railways is leveraging technological innovations to ensure the success of this project. Advanced manufacturing techniques, coupled with the use of high-quality materials, will enhance the durability and performance of the new coaches. Additionally, the integration of smart technologies in coach design and operation will improve efficiency and passenger satisfaction. These innovations will set new benchmarks in the railway industry, showcasing Indian Railways’ commitment to modernization and excellence.

Passenger Feedback and Continuous Improvement

To ensure that the new coaches meet passenger expectations, Indian Railways will actively seek feedback from travelers. This feedback will be used to make continuous improvements, ensuring that the services evolve to meet changing needs. By staying attuned to passenger preferences and incorporating their suggestions, Indian Railways aims to deliver a superior travel experience.
