Four Navratris grace the Hindu calendar each year, with Sharanava Navratri and Chaitra Navratri being the most grandly celebrated. It’s a common belief that Goddess Durga makes her presence felt during each Navratri, arriving on one of her five designated vehicles: the lion, elephant, horse, boat, and palanquin. The lion holds the distinction of being her primary vehicle. Each Navratri, the goddess chooses from among the elephant, horse, boat, or palanquin, and it’s said that the vehicle of her choice foretells the fortunes to come.

Navratri 2023: What Goddess Durga’s Chosen Vehicle Means for You

The announcement of which vehicle Goddess Durga will arrive in coincides with the start of Navratri. According to the Devi Bhagwat, if Navratri begins on a Sunday or Monday, the goddess will arrive on an elephant. This year, Navratri starts on Sunday, October 15; thus, Goddess Durga is expected to arrive on an elephant. On the other hand, if Navratri falls on a Saturday or Tuesday, she will come riding a horse, a boat if it’s a Wednesday, and a palanquin if it’s a Thursday.

Significance of Elephant Arrival: An elephant’s arrival is considered highly auspicious. It heralds a season of abundant rainfall, leading to prosperous harvests and an overall increase in national well-being. It signifies that the populace will experience peace and tranquility. Given that Goddess Durga is expected to arrive on an elephant this year, it bodes well for the welfare and peace of the nation’s inhabitants.

Inauspicious Vehicles: It is deemed inauspicious if Goddess Durga arrives on either a horse or a palanquin. Such an occurrence is viewed as an ominous sign, often associated with the outbreak of wars or epidemics, leading to widespread suffering and loss.

Special Mention: Durga Palki: Regardless of the vehicle she arrives in, receiving an auspicious Durga Palki is considered a good omen for the individual. A boat is particularly regarded as a favorable means of arrival.

Vehicle for Departure: Both the arrival and departure vehicles of Goddess Durga carry significant meaning. This year, Navratri will conclude on a Monday, so the goddess will both arrive and depart on an elephant, doubling the auspicious implications.
