The handloom weavers of the State have earned laurels at the National level by winning prestigious Sant Kabir Puraskar and Rashtriya Puraskar for their outstanding contributions in promoting the traditional art of the State.
Shri Narotam Ram of village Takoli of Mandi district and Shri Suran Ram of Village Kandhi, Tehsil Chachiot of Mandi district have been awarded with Sant Kabir Puraskar and Rashtriya Puraskar respectively for year 2013. Smt. Bhainsru Devi wife of Shri Narotam Ram of village Takoli of Mandi district and Smt. Kamla Devi of village Suma of Kullu district were awarded with Rashtriya Puraskar 2014.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi presented these awards during National Handloom Day organized in Chennai recently.
Shri Narotam Ram was presented Rs. six lakh, memento and citation whereas, Shri Surat Ram, Smt. Bhainsru Devi and Smt. Kamla Devi were presented Rs. one lakh each besides mementos and citation.
Commissioner, Industries Shri Rajender Singh has congratulated the award winners and said that it was a big achievement to the State. He said that this would go a long way in promoting the handloom sector which was world famous and more weavers would be inspired to excel in this field.
