New Delhi — : The Severe weather is sweeping across northern and western India, triggering widespread rainfall alerts and flooding concerns. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow alerts across several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Jammu & Kashmir, as the monsoon intensifies.

Heavy Rains Lash Uttar Pradesh, Widespread Flooding Reported

On Thursday, Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh recorded 120 mm of rain in 24 hours, causing waterlogging in several areas. Cities including Agra, Mathura, Aligarh, Lucknow, Meerut, Bareilly, and over 25 other districts experienced light to moderate showers. The IMD forecasts even more widespread and intense rainfall on Friday, June 20.

Since Wednesday, monsoon showers that began in the southern part of Uttar Pradesh have now expanded into the Terai region, central, and western districts. The IMD has issued orange alerts for districts such as Banda, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Prayagraj, and Sonbhadra, indicating very heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, yellow alerts have been sounded in 23 districts, with over 55 districts under thunderstorm and lightning warnings.

Deaths Reported as Rain Batters Jharkhand

Jharkhand is also facing the brunt of the monsoon. Two consecutive days of heavy downpours have claimed the lives of four people, with rivers overflowing and flood-like conditions emerging in several low-lying areas.

Maharashtra on Edge: Orange Alert in Mumbai, Raigad, Thane

In Maharashtra, key regions like Mumbai, Raigad, Thane, and Ratnagiri are under orange alert. Rivers in Raigad have crossed danger levels, forcing authorities to shut down schools and colleges in affected areas. The situation remains critical as more rain is expected over the weekend.

Srinagar Records Hottest June Day in 20 Years

While parts of the country battle flooding, Srinagar reported 35.2°C on Thursday, marking its hottest June day in two decades. Weather officials expect the monsoon to advance toward Delhi, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh within the coming days, potentially bringing relief from rising heat.

As the monsoon continues to strengthen, the combination of record rainfall, lightning threats, and heat extremes is creating serious concerns across multiple Indian states.
