The Indian Premier League (IPL) has established itself as one of the most prestigious and financially lucrative cricket leagues in the world since its inception in 2008. Despite its global appeal, Pakistani cricketers have been notably absent from the IPL since 2009 due to political tensions. However, there is now a possibility that this could change, as former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Aamir has expressed his interest in playing in IPL 2026. His pathway to the tournament hinges on his UK citizenship application, which, if approved, could make him eligible to participate as an overseas player.
Mohammad Aamir’s Aspirations for IPL 2026
Former Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Aamir, who retired from international cricket in December 2020, has revealed his ambition to feature in the IPL. During a recent media interaction in Pakistan, Aamir stated, “By next year, I will get a chance to play in the IPL, and if I get an opportunity, why not? I will play.”
Aamir’s eligibility for the IPL is contingent upon his successful acquisition of British citizenship. His wife, Narjis, is a UK citizen, and he has been residing in the UK, which has allowed him to apply for citizenship status. If approved, Aamir would no longer be classified as a Pakistani cricketer but rather as a British player, making him eligible for selection in the IPL under foreign player slots.
Why Pakistani Players Are Not Allowed in IPL?
The first season of the IPL in 2008 saw several Pakistani players participating in the tournament. However, following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, Pakistani players were banned from IPL participation due to heightened political tensions between India and Pakistan. Since then, no cricketer from Pakistan has played in the IPL, even though several former Pakistani cricketers have been involved in the league as coaches and commentators.
Aamir Criticizes Double Standards in Pakistan Cricket
In his interview, Aamir also responded to potential criticism from Pakistani fans over his desire to play in the IPL. He pointed out that while Pakistani players have been banned from IPL participation, former cricketers such as Wasim Akram and Rameez Raja have actively contributed to the league as commentators and coaches. Wasim Akram previously served as the coach for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), while Rameez Raja was a regular in the commentary panel.
Aamir’s comments reflect a broader debate within Pakistan about the role of Pakistani cricketers in foreign leagues and whether the current restrictions on IPL participation should be reconsidered
