New Delhi : The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a significant contract worth over Rs 26,000 crore with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the production of 240 AL-31FP aero engines, which will be used to power the Su-30MKI aircraft. This initiative aligns with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) campaign, emphasizing domestic manufacturing and self-reliance in defense.
The engines will be manufactured at HAL’s Koraput Division, with a production rate of 30 engines per year, completing the contract over the next eight years. The project will boost the operational readiness of the Indian Air Force’s Su-30 fleet and contribute to national defense preparedness.
HAL plans to involve India’s defense manufacturing ecosystem, including MSMEs and both public and private industries, in this project. By the end of the delivery schedule, HAL aims to increase the indigenous content of the engines to 63%, with an average of over 54%, thereby enhancing the local capabilities for repair and overhaul of these engines.
This contract marks a significant step toward reducing dependency on foreign suppliers and strengthening India’s defense manufacturing capabilities.
