Lula da Silva and Trump Hold 30-Minute Call on Tariffs, Agree to Meet Soon

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva

Brasilia/Washington:
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and US President Donald Trump spoke on the phone for 30 minutes, discussing trade relations and tariffs. During the conversation, President Lula requested the removal of US tariffs and sanctions affecting Brazilian goods and officials.

The phone call was cordial, and both leaders agreed to meet in person soon, according to a statement issued by the Brazilian government.

Trump’s Tariff Policy and Brazil

US tariffs have recently affected several key Brazilian exports. Initially, a 10% tariff was imposed on Brazilian goods, which Trump later increased to 40%. Some measures brought the total tariff impact to 50%, affecting Brazil’s trade significantly.

During the call, Trump described the discussion as very positive. He wrote on social media:

“We will continue our discussions and meet in Brazil and the United States in the near future.”

Positive Tone and Future Plans

Brazilian President Lula da Silva proposed a meeting during the ASEAN summit in Malaysia and expressed his interest in visiting the United States for further talks.

The Brazilian delegation for the phone call included Finance Minister Fernando Haddad, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira. Haddad described the conversation as positive and constructive, reflecting both countries’ desire to improve economic and trade relations.

This development marks a shift in Brazil-US dialogue, signaling a potential easing of tensions and greater cooperation in trade matters.
