LPG Gas Subsidy : We have some great news for all those households in India that use LPG cylinders for cooking. After the Modi government came to power, a majority of households have received gas connections. LPG cylinder is an ideal system for cooking as it does not produce smoke, thereby promoting clean fuel for cooking and protecting the health of women. To further promote this cause, the government has announced the resumption of subsidy on LPG cylinders, providing relief to those who have gas connections.

The Energy Transition Committee of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has recommended that the government should provide subsidy on seven to eight cylinders annually. This report suggests that the government will soon take a decision on the matter. Given the skyrocketing prices of fuel and LPG gas, government subsidy can provide some much-needed relief. The current price of a non-subsidised cylinder in Delhi is Rs 834.50, which is a significant amount for many households.

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana and LPG connections

The Modi government started the ‘Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana’ in 2016, and since then, LPG connections have been issued to 9.5 crore low-income families until September 2022. Currently, LPG is being used in 30 crore households across the country.

Earlier, subsidy was available on 12 cylinders annually. However, due to the high cost of LPG, 85 percent of households in the country are not able to fully utilize LPG for cooking. To combat this problem, the government has decided to provide subsidy on eight cylinders annually. By reducing the number of subsidized LPG cylinders, the total amount of subsidy given by the government will decrease by 13 to 15 percent. It is generally believed that eight cylinders are required annually for cooking in a household.

Subsidy criteria

In the report, it has been recommended to leave the subsidy on behalf of the rich people as before. Besides, it has been said that if a family consumes three cylinders every year, then they will be given more subsidy than those who take four to seven cylinders. This change in subsidy criteria is expected to benefit households that consume fewer cylinders and are in dire need of government support.

Still, three-fourths of the families in the country do not have an LPG connection. The monthly income of these families is less than Rs 10,000. It is imperative that these households receive the necessary support from the government in the form of subsidies for LPG cylinders.

By providing subsidy on seven to eight cylinders annually, the government has taken a significant step in this direction. The change in subsidy criteria will also benefit low-income families that consume fewer cylinders.
