This extraordinary and uproarious adventure unfolds in the treacherous landscapes of Colombia, specifically in the infamous territory of Pablo Escobar’s Medellín district. Gastambide’s film follows the daring exploits of Reda as he hatches a daring plan to rescue his younger brother from the clutches of ruthless drug traffickers associated with the notorious Medellín cartel. Adding to the excitement, the Amazon Original features a special guest appearance by the legendary Mike Tyson.
Being the first filmmaker to venture into the perilous district of Medellín to shoot his movie, Gastambide shared his exhilarating experience, stating, “No one had ever dared to film in the ‘Pablo-Escobar district,’ an area established by the infamous drug lord himself. At first, it was daunting, but we felt secure throughout our time there. We were warmly welcomed by the local residents, who expressed gratitude for choosing their neighborhood as a backdrop for our film. In fact, at the end of each shooting day, they even invited us to join them for meals.”
Gastambide went on to elaborate, “The people there have a somewhat complex relationship with Pablo Escobar [may he rest in peace since 1993, editor’s note]. They acknowledge his monstrous actions, yet they are grateful to him because he provided for them in ways that no one else did. Even today, his mother visits the area, bringing supplies for the children. Among the younger generation, he is regarded as something of an uncle figure.”
In addition to directing this remarkable film, Franck Gastambide also co-wrote the script and took on an acting role. He is joined by a stellar cast, including Anouar Toubali, Ramzy Bedia, Brahim Bouhlel, Raymond Cruz, and Essined Aponte, each delivering memorable performances in pivotal roles. “Medellín,” a French Original production, is brought to life by the talented team at Kowloon Film, led by producers Eric Altmayer and Nicolas Altmayer.
