Comedian Kunal Kamra Faces FIR Over Remarks on Eknath Shinde, Shiv Sena Threatens Action
Mumbai has become the center of controversy after stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra faced an FIR for his comments on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The incident has sparked political tensions, with Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) leaders warning Kamra to apologize or face consequences.
What Led to the FIR Against Kunal Kamra?
The controversy began when Kunal Kamra made critical remarks about Eknath Shinde during a stand-up show. The comments enraged Shiv Sena supporters, leading to violent protests at the venue where the show was filmed.
On Sunday, March 24, Shiv Sena workers stormed and vandalized Hotel Unicontinental in Khar, where Kamra’s show took place. The comedian allegedly referred to Shinde as a ‘traitor’, which triggered outrage among party members.

Following the incident, an FIR was filed against Shiv Sena Yuva Sena (Shinde faction) General Secretary Rahul Kanal and 19 others under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Maharashtra Police Act.
Shiv Sena’s Warning: ‘Apologize or Else’
Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) MLA Murji Patel has filed an FIR against Kamra at MIDC police station, demanding legal action against him. Patel issued a stern warning, stating:
“Kunal Kamra must apologize to Eknath Shinde within two days, or Shiv Sainiks will not allow him to roam freely in Mumbai. If he appears in public, we will smear his face with soot. We will raise this issue in the assembly and urge the Home Minister to take immediate action.”
The aggressive response from Shiv Sena members has fueled a heated debate on freedom of speech versus political retaliation.
Congress Reacts: ‘Follow the Rule of Law’
Amid rising tensions, Congress has condemned the vandalism and urged both Shiv Sena and the government to follow legal procedures.
Congress leader Atul Londhe stated:
“I do not support vandalism. If anyone has grievances, they should file a legal complaint instead of resorting to violence. Kunal Kamra is a comedian and writer who comments on societal issues. If you have problems with stand-up comedy, ban it completely. Why fear criticism? This is against freedom of expression and the Constitution.”
The case has now raised critical questions about the boundaries of satire and the tolerance of political criticism in India.
