Cold conditions intensified across the Kashmir Valley on Saturday as temperatures dropped sharply, with Srinagar recording a minimum of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius, officials said. The fall marked a nearly three-degree dip compared to the previous night, signaling a fresh spell of harsh winter.
According to the Meteorological Department, night temperatures declined across most parts of Kashmir, while daytime temperatures also saw a marginal fall. Srinagar’s maximum temperature settled at 10.7°C, around 1.8 degrees above normal, while the minimum remained within the seasonal average.
Temperatures Across Kashmir
The gateway town of Qazigund recorded a maximum of 10.6°C, about 1.7 degrees above normal, while the minimum dipped to -2.8°C. Tourist hotspot Pahalgam recorded a low of -4.8°C, and Gulmarg, another major winter destination, recorded a minimum of -4.2°C.
Other notable minimum temperatures included Srinagar Airport (-3.8°C), Kupwara (-3.8°C), Pulwama (-4.3°C), Shopian (-4.7°C) and Sonamarg (-5.8°C).
Jammu and Ladakh See Sharp Contrast
In the Jammu region, temperatures were comparatively higher, with Jammu city recording 7.1°C, while Bhaderwah dropped to 0.2°C. The Ladakh region remained extremely cold, with Leh at -9.9°C, Kargil at -9.2°C, and Nubra Valley at -8.8°C.
Rain and Snow Forecast Ahead
The Meteorological Department said cloudy conditions will prevail from Sunday, with light rain expected on Monday. Officials also forecast that the New Year could begin with snowfall, especially across higher reaches.
From December 30 to January 1, light rain is likely in plains, while snowfall is expected in mountainous areas, including the possibility of light snowfall in Srinagar and nearby plains.
Authorities have also warned of moderate to dense fog in Jammu plains over the next five days, which could impact visibility and traffic movement. There are concerns that traffic at the Zojila Pass may face disruptions due to weather conditions.
