New Delhi, India | November 24, 2025 — Justice Surya Kant was sworn as the 53rd Chief Justice of India, ushering in a significant transition at the Supreme Court. The oath was administered by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, in the presence of senior judges, ministers, and legal luminaries.

Regarded as one of the judiciary’s most influential voices in recent years, Justice Kant has played a central role in several landmark rulings, including judgments related to the abrogation of Article 370 and the Pegasus surveillance controversy. His judicial philosophy, marked by clarity, balance, and constitutional fidelity, has shaped critical debates on civil liberties and national security.

As he takes over leadership of the Supreme Court, Justice Kant is expected to prioritize judicial transparency, faster case disposal, and continued reforms in digital court systems. His tenure comes at a time when the judiciary faces mounting caseloads, public scrutiny, and evolving legal challenges in the era of technology and governance reforms.

Legal experts believe his elevation will bring continuity and renewed direction to the apex court’s functioning, especially as pending constitutional matters continue to dominate national discourse.

Justice Kant succeeds Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, whose tenure saw major decisions on technology, civil rights, and social justice.

With Justice Surya Kant at the helm, India’s judiciary enters a new chapter marked by experience, constitutional insight, and a commitment to reforms.
