Brasília, November 23, 2025 :
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested on charges linked to an alleged coup attempt following months of investigations into his post-election conduct. Federal authorities confirmed that Bolsonaro was taken into custody early today and has been placed in pre-trial detention as proceedings move forward.
Investigators allege that Bolsonaro and several close associates were involved in efforts to overturn the presidential election results, a charge he has repeatedly denied. His legal team called the arrest “politically motivated,” while government officials insist the case is based on substantial evidence collected over the past year.
The arrest triggered immediate demonstrations across Brazil, with thousands of Bolsonaro supporters taking to the streets of Rio de Janeiro, waving flags and chanting slogans against the government. Police forces were deployed to manage the crowds as tensions escalated in parts of the city.
Meanwhile, political observers warn that Bolsonaro’s detention could deepen divisions in an already polarized nation. International leaders and human rights organizations have urged Brazilian authorities to ensure transparency and fairness throughout the legal process.
Bolsonaro is expected to appear before a federal judge later this week as formal charges are presented.
