New Delhi, January 4, 2026
Weather conditions across most parts of India are expected to remain dry with clear skies on Sunday, January 4, 2026. However, severe winter conditions continue to affect large parts of North and Central India, with biting cold and dense fog disrupting normal life.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several northern and eastern states due to an ongoing cold wave and reduced visibility caused by dense to very dense fog.
❄️ North India: Cold Wave and Dense Fog
A cold wave warning has been issued for parts of Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, where temperatures are expected to remain unusually low. In Delhi, the minimum temperature is likely to hover between 7°C and 9°C.
Dense to very dense fog is forecast during the morning hours across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, significantly reducing visibility. Road and rail traffic may be affected, and commuters are advised to exercise caution.
Cold day conditions are also expected to persist in parts of Bihar, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh, where daytime temperatures may remain well below seasonal averages.
🌧️ South India: Light Rain Expected
While most of the country experiences dry weather, southern India remains an exception. Coastal Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Lakshadweep may receive light rainfall today.
In Chennai, skies are expected to remain overcast, with the maximum temperature likely to stay around 26.5°C.
🌫️ Central and Eastern India
Parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are also witnessing the impact of cold conditions, with morning mist likely in several areas.
In eastern India, the IMD has issued an orange alert for dense fog in Odisha for the next two days. Parts of West Bengal may also experience reduced visibility during early morning hours.
🏔️ Himalayan Region: Chance of Snowfall
In the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh, cloudy conditions are expected, with the possibility of light snowfall at isolated locations.
⚠️ Key Advisory
The IMD has urged travelers to plan journeys carefully due to fog-related visibility issues, especially in northern and eastern regions. Motorists are advised to use fog lights and avoid early morning travel where possible.
