New Delhi | April 10, 2025 — India is battling extreme and bizarre weather conditions as severe heatwaves scorch the North, West, and Central regions, while heavy rainfall, hailstorms, lightning strikes, and even snowfall are creating havoc in other parts of the country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts across states for both extreme heat and thunderstorms, making this April feel like the peak of summer mixed with monsoon chaos.
🔥 North India Boils: Heatwave Grips 10+ States
From the plains of Himachal Pradesh to Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi, the sun is blazing mercilessly, with temperatures crossing 45°C in several locations. Delhi, Rajasthan, and Gujarat continue to experience a severe heatwave, with IMD classifying the current weather as “red alert” level heat stress.
Residents are reporting heatstroke cases, power outages, and drinking water shortages, especially in rural belts of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
“This feels like June heat in April,” said a local from Jaipur, where the maximum temperature hit 44.5°C on Wednesday.
🌩️ Tragedy in Bihar and Jharkhand: 13 Dead in Lightning Strikes
While the northern plains boiled, lightning strikes during sudden storms in Bihar and Jharkhand claimed 13 lives and injured 12 others, including 9 schoolgirls in Jharkhand’s Koderma district.
In Begusarai, 5 people were killed and 3 injured.
Madhubani reported 3 deaths, including 2 women.
Darbhanga witnessed 4 fatalities, including a 10-year-old boy.
In Samastipur, one person died due to lightning.
In Jharkhand, 9 girl students were struck by lightning during school hours — all are now out of danger.
The sudden storm activity was attributed to western disturbances colliding with local moisture systems.
🌦️ Weather Twist in Delhi, UP, Uttarakhand: Thunderstorms & Light Rain Ahead
According to the IMD, a light drizzle with thunder and lightning is likely in Delhi and NCR on Thursday, bringing mild relief. Winds will gust between 30–40 km/h, and temperatures may dip by 1–2°C.
In Uttarakhand, villages like Tharali and Chamoli saw three hours of torrential rain and storms, damaging property and scaring locals. Snowfall was also reported in Lahaul-Spiti of Himachal, and many areas in Kullu experienced heavy downpours.
In Uttar Pradesh, over 45 districts, especially in the Terai belt, are expected to witness light rain and thunderstorms from Thursday onwards. The IMD has advised farmers and citizens to prepare for sudden weather swings.
🌍 Extreme Weather: A Wake-up Call?
The current weather pattern is being called a climate anomaly, with scorching heat in one half of the country and flash floods and lightning in the other. Experts are warning of “seasonal overlap”, where summer, monsoon, and pre-winter effects collide.
“India is facing a weather emergency — climate change is making our seasons unpredictable and dangerous,” said Dr. A.K. Srivastava, senior meteorologist.
