New Delhi: In a major move to enhance user security and curb rising spam and fraud calls, the Indian government is preparing to roll out a verified caller identification system that will display the authentic name of the caller on mobile devices.

The initiative, known as “Calling Name Presentation” (CNAP), is being developed by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in coordination with telecom service providers. It aims to bring transparency to incoming calls and minimize the surge in spam, scam, and phishing attempts across mobile networks.

☎️ How the Verified Caller ID Will Work

Under the new system, when users receive a call, the registered name of the caller as per KYC records will be displayed on the recipient’s screen — similar to popular third-party apps but with government-backed authentication.

The CNAP framework will operate natively through telecom networks, ensuring privacy and data protection while preventing spoofed numbers from misleading users.

“The goal is to empower citizens with accurate caller information and reduce the nuisance and risk of fraudulent calls,” a senior TRAI official stated.

🔒 Boosting User Trust and Security

With spam and robocalls emerging as one of India’s biggest telecom concerns, the verified caller ID feature is expected to strengthen digital safety.
It will also assist law enforcement agencies in tracking fraud networks more effectively.

🗓️ Rollout Timeline

Telecom operators are currently testing the system’s integration. Full-scale implementation is expected in phases over the coming months, with trials already underway in select circles.

🌐 Background

India remains one of the world’s largest mobile markets — and among the most spam-prone. The CNAP initiative is part of a broader digital safety strategy that includes stricter KYC norms, call labeling, and AI-based spam detection.
