New Delhi – Hopes for a breakthrough in the long-discussed India–United States trade deal are rising. The Global Trade Research Institute has claimed that the steep 50% tariff imposed by the U.S. on Indian goods could soon be reduced to just 10–15%.
🤝 High-Level Talks in New Delhi
Officials from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), led by Chief Negotiator Brendan Lynch, recently held discussions with Indian counterparts in New Delhi.
India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry described the talks as “positive,” adding that both sides have agreed to accelerate efforts toward a mutually beneficial trade agreement.
📈 Background: Tariff Tensions
Negotiations had stalled after the United States imposed an additional 25% tariff on India on August 27, citing India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. This raised the overall U.S. tariff on Indian goods to 50%, sparking concerns in business circles.
The fresh dialogue is being seen as a sign of progress and a possible thaw in the strained trade relations.
🎂 Trump’s Gesture to PM Modi
Amid the trade talks, U.S. President Donald Trump extended birthday wishes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, signaling a more cordial political tone alongside economic negotiations.
📅 Timeline for Agreement
Just days earlier, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal indicated that the first phase of the India–US trade deal is expected to be finalized by November 2025.
If tariffs are indeed reduced to 10–15%, experts believe this would significantly boost bilateral trade, ease business operations, and provide relief to exporters.
