Mumbai — : Corona cases are once again seeing a steady rise across India, with Maharashtra witnessing a significant spike. As per official data, 210 new COVID-19 patients were reported in Maharashtra alone. The virus claimed the life of a 21-year-old youth undergoing treatment since May 22 in Kalwa, Thane. India Detects Four New COVID-19 Variants: LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1
The resurgence is being linked to the emergence of four new variants—LF.7, XFG, NB.1.8.1, and JN.1. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has begun analyzing these new strains. Notably, the JN.1 variant is a sub-lineage of the Omicron BA.2.86, also known as “Pirola,” which was first identified in August 2023. By December 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) had labeled JN.1 a “variant of interest.” This strain reportedly carries around 30 mutations, impacting the immune response significantly. According to Johns Hopkins University, while JN.1 spreads faster than its predecessors, it typically causes mild illness.
Symptoms of JN.1 Variant You Should Watch For
People infected with the JN.1 variant may experience symptoms like headache, fever, burning eyes, dry cough, sore throat, chills, loss of taste or smell, fatigue, vomiting, and muscle pain. In some cases, these symptoms may persist for several weeks, leading to what experts call “chronic COVID”—a condition where symptoms continue even after initial recovery.
Searches for “latest COVID-19 variant in India,” “JN.1 symptoms,” and “corona cases in Maharashtra” have surged, indicating renewed public concern as the virus makes a fresh comeback.
