New Delhi : India is taking a decisive step to counter the increasing use of drones by its neighbor, Pakistan. The Indian security forces have decided to deploy a state-of-the-art anti-drone system along the western border, specifically targeting the smuggling of weapons and illicit substances.
The Drone Menace: A Persistent Security Challenge
For years, Pakistan has exploited drone technology for the trafficking of arms, explosives, and narcotics across its western border into India. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, India has chosen to implement an anti-drone system within its borders, focusing on the western front for the next six months.
India is currently rigorously testing three different technologies for anti-drone measures. Post the six-month testing period, one of these technologies or a combination thereof will be selected for implementation. This strategic move aims to bolster security in regions like Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir, where the incursion of Pakistani drones has been a persistent challenge for security agencies.
The Alarming Numbers: Drones in the Crosshairs
Recent statistics provided by the Border Security Force (BSF) reveal the severity of the drone threat. Between November 1, 2022, and October 31, 2023, security forces seized a staggering 90 drones. Of these, 81 were confiscated in Punjab, while the remaining 9 were intercepted in Rajasthan. The numbers, already concerning, mark a significant increase from the previous year, highlighting the escalating use of drones for nefarious activities.
The BSF’s Successful Countermeasure Endeavors
The BSF, employing handheld static and vehicle-mounted anti-drone systems, has demonstrated notable success in curbing the trafficking of narcotics and arms from Pakistan. The recent interception of lightweight drones carrying payloads of 750 grams in the western border region emphasizes the evolving nature of the threat.
The Origin of the Drone Invasion
A significant portion of the drones detected in these operations is traced back to China, primarily due to their accessibility and cost-effectiveness compared to counterparts manufactured in Turkey or Iran. This raises concerns about the broader implications of regional collaboration in the drone black market, and the need for a comprehensive strategy to counter this transnational threat.
