New Delhi, December 8, 2025 : A brutal cold wave has tightened its grip across northern and eastern India as temperatures continue to plummet, with several areas recording readings below freezing point. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light snowfall in higher reaches of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on December 8-9, while dense fog is likely to blanket Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, western Uttar Pradesh and northern Rajasthan over the next few days, severely impacting road, rail and air traffic.

  • Lunakaran (Bikaner): 5°C
  • Dausa: 6°C

Jharkhand Joins the Deep Freeze Eight districts recorded minimum temperatures below 10°C:

  • Gumla (coldest): 3.5°C
  • Khunti: 5°C
  • Ranchi: 7.5°C

  • Jamshedpur: 9.6°C Ranchi Meteorological Centre Deputy Director Abhishek Anand said north-westerly winds are driving the sharp drop. The weather will remain dry for the next five days, with a possible 2-3°C rise after 72 hours.

What’s Next? IMD warns that the second week of December will see intensified cold as fresh Western Disturbances become active. While hills may witness fresh snowfall, plains will experience colder nights followed by marginal daytime relief. Dense to very dense fog is expected in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR and western UP from December 8-11, likely causing flight delays and highway slowdowns.
