Gather the necessary documents: Before starting the filing process, ensure you have all the relevant documents and information at hand. This may include your PAN card, Form-16 (provided by your employer), bank statements, investment details, and other supporting documents related to your income and deductions.
Visit the Income Tax Department’s official website: Go to the official website of the Income Tax Department, which is https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/. Make sure you are on the correct website to avoid any fraudulent platforms.
Register or log in: If you’re a new user, you’ll need to register yourself on the portal. Provide the necessary details, such as your PAN, name, date of birth, and contact information, to create an account. If you’re already registered, simply log in using your credentials.
Select the appropriate ITR form: Once you’re logged in, select the relevant ITR form based on your income sources and other criteria. For example, ITR-1 is for salaried individuals with income up to Rs 50 lakh and ITR-4 is for individuals with business income.
Pre-fill the form: The online form will have pre-filled data based on the information available with the Income Tax Department, such as your PAN, name, and personal details. Verify the pre-filled data and make any necessary edits or additions.
Fill in the remaining details: Complete the rest of the form by entering the required information, including income details, deductions, tax payments, and other relevant sections based on your income sources. Ensure accuracy and double-check all the entries.
Calculate tax payable or refundable: The online form will calculate the tax payable or refundable based on the information provided. It will consider the applicable tax rates and deductions to determine the final tax liability.
Validate and submit the form: After filling in all the required details, validate the form to check for any errors or missing information. Once validated, submit the form electronically. You will receive an acknowledgment number upon successful submission.
E-verify your return: After submitting the form, you need to verify your return within the specified time. This can be done electronically through various methods such as net banking, Aadhaar OTP, or by generating an Electronic Verification Code (EVC).
Keep a copy of the acknowledgment: After successfully e-verifying your return, download and save a copy of the acknowledgment for future reference. The acknowledgment serves as proof of filing your ITR.
It’s important to note that the process may vary slightly based on your specific circumstances and any updates made by the Income Tax Department. It’s advisable to refer to the official website and consult a tax professional for personalized guidance, especially if you have complex tax situations or queries.
