New Delhi — : The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has officially extended the income tax return (ITR) filing deadline for Assessment Year 2025–26. The new last date to file ITR is now September 15, 2025, instead of the earlier deadline of July 31. This extension gives taxpayers, especially salaried individuals and those not requiring audits, extra time to comply without penalties.
CBDT made the announcement via its official handle on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting that the ITR form notification was delayed due to recent changes aimed at improving reporting accuracy and transparency. The board explained that the revised ITR forms required significant system development and testing time, making the original deadline unfeasible.
The most significant benefit of this extension will go to individual salaried taxpayers and others who are not subject to audit requirements. With an additional 46 days to file, eligible taxpayers can now avoid the late filing penalty of ₹5,000 and ensure accurate returns.
The updated ITR forms for FY 2024–25 are part of CBDT’s broader strategy to enhance digital compliance, ensure proper TDS credit reflection, and integrate transparent tax reporting processes. These changes required backend upgrades and testing that led to the timeline adjustment.
By extending the deadline, the Income Tax Department aims to ease the filing process for millions of taxpayers and reduce filing errors due to technical issues or incomplete TDS data.
