HAL Confident as GE to Supply 12 GE-404 Engines for MK-1A Tejas Fighter Aircraft This Year

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Chairman DK Sunil confirmed that General Electric (GE) will increase engine deliveries for the MK-1A Tejas fighter aircraft, with 12 engines expected by the end of the fiscal year. This is a significant boost for India’s indigenous fighter aircraft program.

Tejas MK-1A Powered by GE-404 Engine

The Tejas fighter aircraft relies on the GE-404 engine, developed by the American aerospace giant General Electric. HAL has been coordinating closely with GE, sharing production data and updates regularly.

According to DK Sunil, GE has promised to supply 20 engines next year, ensuring that the production pipeline for the MK-1A remains uninterrupted.

“We are increasing production capacity. GE promised to deliver 12 engines a year. But now we will probably get 12 engines by the end of the financial year. We may get 10 this year, and the rest will be delivered by March,” Sunil said.

HAL has already built the 10th MK-1A aircraft, and the 11th is ready, as the company works to streamline its supply chain for faster production.

Existing Engine Issues Resolved

Sunil stated that previous production and supply challenges have been addressed. GE officials are now regularly updating HAL on engine status, allowing for better coordination and timely deliveries.

“Existing problems have now been resolved. We are confident that GE will now be able to increase production and meet our requirements,” he added.

No Plans for French Engines on MK-2 Aircraft

Responding to media reports, HAL Chairman DK Sunil confirmed that French engines are not being considered for India’s MK-2 advanced fighter aircraft. The indigenous program is designed around the GE-414 engine, and negotiations with GE are in advanced stages.

He also clarified that US tariffs on Indian goods will not affect ongoing discussions with GE regarding engine supply.

Implications for India’s Air Force

The increased engine supply from GE will enable HAL to accelerate the induction of the MK-1A Tejas fleet, enhancing India’s air defense capabilities. With the resolution of past supply issues, HAL is poised to meet its production targets and deliver aircraft to the Indian Air Force on schedule.
