Government’s subsidy burden has come down

Government’s subsidy burden has come down from Rs 37,209 crore in the year 2018-19 to Rs 242 crore in the year 2021-22

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has said that the high price of subsidized cylinders under the Ujjwala scheme is going to cripple the scheme. He asserted that this good scheme launched by the erstwhile United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government has practically died due to the insensitive stand of the present government.

Chidambaram said the success of the Ujjwala scheme can be judged by the rate of cylinder filling by the beneficiaries.

He said that only 25 per cent of the beneficiaries get one or two or three cylinders filled in a year, the rest of the month they do not use LPG i.e. clean fuel. The former Union Minister said that these are the poorest families among the beneficiaries. This proves that the high price (Rs 853) of subsidized cylinder is proving to be a crippling criterion for the scheme.

Chidambaram said the good plan started by the previous UPA government practically got wiped out because of the insensitive approach of the present government. The subsidy burden of the government has come down from Rs 37,209 crore in the year 2018-19 to Rs 242 crore in the year 2021-22.
