Google has issued a strong warning to users worldwide after detecting a surge in malicious VPN applications disguised as secure privacy tools. These fake apps are reportedly stealing sensitive user data, including login credentials, browsing activity, and financial information, as cyber threats escalate across the digital ecosystem.
According to Google’s security team, cybercriminals are increasingly publishing apps that mimic legitimate VPN services, exploiting the growing demand for online privacy solutions. Many of these malicious apps have been found outside official app stores, though some have also managed to slip past security filters before being removed.
Google urged users to download VPN tools only from verified developers, check permissions carefully, and use Google Play Protect to scan devices for threats. Security experts warn that compromised VPN apps can create backdoors, enable data theft, and expose users to identity fraud.
