Gig Workers Strike LIVE: New Year Deliveries at Risk

India’s gig economy faces disruption as delivery workers nationwide strike over pay and delivery conditions, potentially dimming New Year celebrations. The strike began Wednesday under the banner of the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union, calling for the removal of the 10-minute delivery option and higher pay for delivery work.

Potential Impact on Deliveries

According to Sheikh Salahuddin, President of the Telangana Gig Workers Union, the December 25 strike affected 50–60% of orders. “What happened on December 25 was just a preview; the full impact will be seen on December 31,” Salahuddin said. The strike is organized under the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFATW), which represents delivery personnel and drivers for Swiggy, Zomato, Jepto, and Amazon.

Demands to Companies and Government

The workers demand the restoration of the previous payment system and the removal of the 10-minute delivery option across all platforms. Salahuddin stated, “We called strikes on December 25 and 31, with over 40,000 workers participating on the first day. We are open to dialogue, but we also request intervention from both the state and central governments.”

Safety and Earnings Concerns

Salahuddin emphasized that the instant delivery model compromises worker safety, while changes in payment structures have reduced overall earnings. The nationwide strike is expected to significantly impact delivery services, including during the New Year 2026 festivities.
