Gaza Under Fire Again: Israel Expands Ground Operations, 23 Killed in New Airstrike

Israel expands occupation in Gaza, with 23 killed in latest Shijaiyah airstrike

Tel Aviv/Gaza City | April 10, 2025 — The conflict in Gaza has escalated once again after the collapse of the recent ceasefire, with Israel intensifying its military operations and occupying larger parts of the Gaza Strip. A fresh Israeli airstrike on a residential building in Gaza’s Shijaiyah neighborhood killed 23 people, including eight women and eight children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

🇮🇱 Israel’s Ground Expansion Strategy: Gaza Becoming Smaller

During a visit to the Morag Corridor—a key zone between Rafah and Khan Younis—Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced that Israeli forces have taken control of large areas, turning them into what he called “security zones.”

“We are making Gaza smaller and more isolated,” Gallant said. “As long as the hostages remain in captivity, pressure on Hamas will increase. We won’t rest until Hamas is destroyed.”

Gallant also acknowledged that Israel is actively working on voluntary migration plans, signaling a controversial strategy to encourage Palestinians to leave the Strip.

💥 Targeted Strike in Shijaiyah: Hamas Leader or Civilian Massacre?

In the latest deadly strike, Israel claimed it was targeting a senior Hamas commander operating from a densely populated area in Shijaiyah. However, Gaza’s civil defense teams say dozens of civilians remain trapped under rubble, raising alarm about the scale of civilian casualties.

Hamas condemned the attack, calling it a war crime and accusing Israel of intentionally targeting residential areas.

🧍 Remaining Hostages & U.S. Resettlement Plan

Israel’s renewed offensive comes after the collapse of the March ceasefire deal, which was supposed to lead to a phased release of hostages. Now, 24 hostages remain in Hamas custody. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said military pressure will continue until all hostages are released.

Netanyahu also reiterated support for a resettlement plan proposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, which aims to relocate the majority of Gaza’s population to third countries. Human rights organizations have strongly opposed this as a form of forced displacement.

📈 Death Toll Soars Past 50,000

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, more than 50,000 Palestinians have died in Israeli strikes since the war began, with a majority being women and children. The ministry did not break down how many were civilians versus combatants.

Meanwhile, Israel claims it has eliminated over 20,000 Hamas fighters, although independent verification is lacking.

🔥 Global Reaction & Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

The renewed assault has drawn international condemnation. United Nations officials warn of a worsening humanitarian catastrophe, with over 1.2 million Gazans displaced, medical infrastructure destroyed, and access to food, water, and electricity severely restricted.

“We are witnessing the shrinking of Gaza and the expansion of trauma,” said a UN aid coordinator.
