New Delhi, India : India’s aviation sector is grappling with major disruptions after the Civil Aviation Ministry ordered IndiGo, the country’s largest airline, to reduce domestic flight operations by 10% effective immediately. The unprecedented directive follows 422 flight cancellations across six major airports on December 9, crippling travel plans for thousands and sparking nationwide outrage.
The order aims to stabilize a network under immense pressure from pilot shortages, dense winter fog, crew scheduling failures, and operational bottlenecks. The disruptions have also triggered fare hikes of up to 300%, straining passengers already dealing with long waits and overcrowded terminals.
IndiGo, which manages 60% of India’s air traffic and operates more than 1,800 daily flights, said it has begun stabilizing operations. However, it now faces potential DGCA penalties of ₹10 lakh per violation if it fails to comply with the schedule reduction or improve service reliability.
IndiGo Responds Amid Passenger Outrage
CEO Pieter Elbers described the crisis as a result of “unforeseen challenges” and pledged more than ₹500 crore in refunds and compensation for affected travelers. He assured customers that the airline is “working around the clock” to rebuild flight schedules and improve crew deployment.
Meanwhile, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu criticized the airline’s handling of the situation, warning that the government would implement stricter oversight measures to prevent similar failures. “Passenger safety and service are non-negotiable,” he said.
Aviation Sector Exposes Structural Weaknesses
The chaos highlights deep structural vulnerabilities in India’s rapidly expanding aviation market, which is projected to serve 300 million passengers by 2030. Experts point to:
Inadequate crew training pipelines
Insufficient airport infrastructure
Rising dependence on private carriers without strong contingency frameworks
Airports reported scenes of passengers sleeping on floors, missing international connections, and posting viral videos demanding accountability. Social media trends like #IndiGoChaos and #AviationReformNow dominated national conversations.
