Election Commission Introduces e-Sign for Voter List Applications, Aadhaar-Based Verification to Prevent Fraud

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has introduced a new e-Sign feature for online voter services, allowing citizens to add, delete, or correct names in the voter list through the ECINET portal and app. The verification uses the applicant’s Aadhaar-linked mobile number, aiming to enhance security and prevent fraudulent applications.

This move comes after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi highlighted an attempt to remove numerous voters’ names from the Aland constituency in Karnataka.

How the e-Sign Feature Works

The e-Sign feature streamlines and secures voter-related applications:

  1. Applicants submit their Aadhaar number via the e-Sign portal.

  2. An OTP is sent to the registered mobile number linked with Aadhaar.

  3. After entering the OTP, identity is verified, and applicants are redirected to the ECINET portal to complete the process.

This method ensures that:

  • Voters’ identities are verified.

  • Fraudulent applications to add, delete, or modify voter names are prevented.

  • Applicants can check if their name is already on the voter list.

Impact on Form Submissions

With e-Sign in place, applicants can no longer fill out Form 6 (new registration), Form 7 (deletion), and Form 8 (correction) directly on the ECINET portal. All submissions now require Aadhaar-based verification, making the process more secure and reliable.

Why It Matters

The e-Sign feature is a major step toward digitizing voter verification, ensuring:

  • Integrity of the electoral process

  • Prevention of voter fraud and duplicate entries

  • Ease and security for citizens applying online

This initiative strengthens transparency and aligns with the Election Commission’s goal of safe, fair, and accessible elections across India.
