New Delhi – On October 14, 2024, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched a significant operation in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, executing simultaneous raids at approximately 20 locations. This extensive investigation targets potential irregularities related to the “Jal Jeevan Mission,” a crucial initiative aimed at ensuring access to safe and adequate drinking water for rural households across India.

Overview of the Raids: Key Locations and Individuals

The raids primarily focus on individuals connected to Minister Mithlesh Thakur, specifically his brother Vinay Thakur and his private secretary Harendra Singh. In addition, several departmental engineers associated with the projects under scrutiny have also come under investigation. Notably, the operation has extended to the residence of a senior IAS officer’s sister on Harihar Road, underscoring the gravity of the allegations involved.

These coordinated actions by the ED come in the wake of public discourse surrounding potential malpractices in government projects. The Jal Jeevan Mission, launched in 2019, aims to provide every rural household with functional tap water connections. However, reports of misuse and corruption have raised alarm bells, prompting the ED’s involvement.

Context and Background: Why the ED is Investigating

The impetus for these raids can be traced back to earlier allegations made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a public rally in Hazaribagh. PM Modi directly accused the Jharkhand state government of corruption, stating that the implementation of central schemes was being compromised. His comments have fueled public scrutiny and necessitated a formal investigation by the ED.

The ED’s involvement signifies a broader commitment to tackling corruption in government schemes. The agency has been increasingly proactive in addressing issues that hinder effective governance and public service delivery. This raid represents a crucial step in a larger strategy to ensure accountability among public officials and to restore public trust in government initiatives.
