Delhi is witnessing severe winter conditions, with the city recording its coldest January 10 morning in the last 15 years. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the minimum temperature dropped to 4.2°C, breaking a long-standing cold record.

In response to worsening conditions, IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for cold wave-like conditions and dense fog across several parts of the national capital.


Cold Record Broken After 15 Years

Saturday’s minimum temperature of 4.2°C marked the lowest recorded temperature for January 10 since 2011.
For comparison:

  • January 9, 2025: 4.8°C

  • Friday (January 9, 2026): 4.6°C

The persistent drop confirms an intensifying cold spell gripping the region.


Foggy Start, Brief Relief by Afternoon

Saturday morning began with dense fog and haze, severely impacting visibility across Delhi. Conditions improved slightly by afternoon as sunlight emerged, offering brief relief.

  • Maximum Temperature: 20.2°C (1.2°C below normal)

  • Minimum Temperature: 4.2°C (2.7°C below normal)

  • Humidity Levels:

    • Maximum: 100%

    • Minimum: 44%


Palam Emerges as the Coldest Spot

IMD data showed Palam as one of the coldest locations:

  • Palam: 4.5°C

  • Aya Nagar: 4.5°C

  • Lodhi Road: 4.7°C

  • Ridge Area: 5.3°C

Visibility at Palam Airport dropped sharply:

  • 7:30 AM: 100 meters

  • 8:00 AM: 50 meters

  • 8:30 AM onward: Gradual improvement to 100 meters

At Safdarjung Observatory, visibility improved from 200 meters at 7:30 AM to 400 meters by 9:00 AM. Winds blew from the west at 5–7 km/h.


Sunday Forecast: Cold Wave and Fog to Persist

IMD has warned that Sunday will continue to see cold wave-like conditions in isolated areas. Morning hours may witness moderate fog in many parts, with dense fog at select locations.

  • Expected Wind Speed: 10–15 km/h (afternoon)

  • Expected Minimum Temperature: 3°C to 5°C


Severe Cold Likely to Continue Till January 16

IMD forecasts continued cold conditions in Delhi:

  • January 12–13: Severe cold expected, minimum temperature 4–6°C

  • January 13–15: Winds at 10–15 km/h

  • January 14: Minimum temperature 5–7°C

  • January 15–16: Minimum temperature 6–8°C

  • Cloud Cover: Partly cloudy skies likely from January 13

  • January 16 Wind Speed: Reduced to 5–10 km/h
