New Delhi, January 4, 2026
Delhi-NCR is experiencing intense winter conditions on Sunday, January 4, 2026, as a fresh spell of cold wave grips the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow and orange alerts for the day, warning of biting cold, dense fog, and reduced visibility across the national capital and surrounding areas.
🌡️ Temperature Update
According to the IMD, Delhi’s minimum temperature is expected to remain between 7°C and 8°C, while the maximum temperature may hover around 17°C to 19°C. Despite sunshine later in the day, icy northwesterly winds are likely to keep conditions uncomfortably cold.
🌫️ Fog and Visibility
Dense to very dense fog is forecast during the early morning hours in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad. Visibility levels may drop sharply, potentially disrupting road, rail, and air traffic during peak morning hours.
❄️ Cold Wave Alert
The IMD stated that a new cold wave phase has begun across Delhi-NCR and is likely to continue for the next three to four days, possibly until January 7. Cold winds from the northwest are expected to blow at speeds ranging from 5 to 15 kmph, further intensifying the chill.
🌬️ Air Quality Remains Poor
Due to low wind speed and stable atmospheric conditions, pollution levels continue to remain high. Delhi’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at around 297 on Sunday morning, placing it in the “poor to very poor” category.
☀️ Sky Condition
While dense fog will dominate the morning hours, the sky is expected to remain clear later in the day, with sunshine likely by afternoon. There is no rainfall forecast for today.
⚠️ Advisory for Residents
Authorities have advised residents to wear adequate warm clothing during early morning and night hours. Motorists are urged to use fog lights, drive slowly, and avoid unnecessary travel during low-visibility periods.
