Early Morning Tremors in Delhi-NCR
Residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) were jolted awake at 5:36 AM IST by a 4.0 magnitude earthquake. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that the epicenter was located in New Delhi, at a shallow depth of 5 kilometers beneath the surface. This proximity resulted in pronounced tremors that lasted several seconds, causing widespread alarm among inhabitants.
The quake’s impact was notably strong in areas such as Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad. Numerous residents evacuated their homes, gathering in open spaces as a precautionary measure. Social media platforms were inundated with firsthand accounts and videos capturing the event, with many describing the experience as both unexpected and unsettling.
Subsequent Seismic Activity in Bihar
Approximately two and a half hours later, at 8:02 AM IST, another earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale struck Bihar’s Siwan district. The NCS confirmed that this quake also originated at a depth of 10 kilometers. Residents reported feeling significant tremors, prompting many to vacate buildings temporarily. As of now, there have been no reports of casualties or substantial structural damage in the region.
Odisha Experiences 4.7 Magnitude Quake
Shortly after the Bihar incident, at approximately 8:15 AM IST, a more potent earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 was recorded in Odisha’s Puri district. The tremors were perceptible in various parts of the state, leading to moments of panic among the populace. Fortunately, initial assessments indicate minimal damage, and no injuries have been reported.
Government Response and Public Advisory
In the wake of these seismic events, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation, urging citizens to remain calm and vigilant. He emphasized the importance of adhering to safety protocols and being prepared for potential aftershocks. The Prime Minister also assured that the government is closely monitoring the situation and is ready to provide assistance wherever necessary.
Delhi’s acting Chief Minister, Atishi, took to social media to express her concern, stating, “A strong earthquake just hit Delhi. I pray to God that everyone is safe.” Her sentiments were echoed by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal, who emphasized the need for public safety and awareness during such events.
