Delhi’s Air Quality Turns ‘Severe’ as AQI Crosses 400; Health Warnings Issued
New Delhi: The air quality in Delhi deteriorated sharply on Saturday, entering the ‘severe’ category with the Air Quality Index (AQI) crossing 400 in several areas, triggering health advisories and renewed calls for tougher winter pollution measures.
According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), areas such as Anand Vihar, Jahangirpuri, and RK Puram recorded AQI levels between 410 and 450, among the highest this season.
🌬️ Smog Blankets the Capital
Thick smog and poor visibility were reported early morning, affecting commuters and air traffic. Meteorologists attribute the spike to stagnant winds, low temperatures, and increased stubble burning in neighboring states.
“Pollution levels have reached hazardous levels for sensitive groups. Prolonged outdoor exposure should be avoided,” warned a CPCB official.
🏥 Health Impact and Warnings
Doctors have urged residents, especially children, the elderly, and those with respiratory issues, to limit outdoor activities.
Hospitals in Delhi NCR reported a rise in respiratory distress cases, with experts warning of potential long-term health effects if conditions persist.
🏛️ Government Response
Authorities have reactivated Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage IV, enforcing restrictions on construction, diesel vehicle movement, and industrial operations.
Schools have been advised to reduce outdoor activities, while discussions on temporary work-from-home advisories are underway.
🌡️ Forecast Ahead
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts only minor relief over the next 48 hours unless wind speeds pick up. Air quality is likely to remain ‘very poor to severe’ through early next week.
