🌊 Severe Cyclone Montha Heads Toward Andhra Coast
Andhra Pradesh is on high alert as Cyclone Montha intensifies over the Bay of Bengal. The storm is expected to make landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, close to Kakinada, by late evening on October 28, 2025, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The IMD has forecast extremely heavy rainfall (over 20 cm in 24 hours) and wind gusts reaching 90–110 km/h, which could trigger flooding in low-lying areas.
“Cyclone Montha is now a severe system moving northwest. Residents in coastal districts must follow official advisories closely,” said Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, IMD Director-General.
⚠️ Preparedness Measures and Evacuations
Authorities in Kakinada, East Godavari, and Krishna districts have begun large-scale evacuations of coastal villages and relocated fishermen inland. Over 60 relief camps are operational, while the NDRF and SDRF teams are deployed to manage emergency response.
Fishing operations remain suspended; all ports along the coast have been closed until further notice.
Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has reviewed preparedness with senior officials and urged citizens to “stay vigilant and cooperate with local authorities for safety.”
🌧️ Expected Impact
Rainfall: Very heavy to extremely heavy rain likely in East Godavari, Visakhapatnam, and Srikakulam.
Wind: Speeds may reach 90–110 km/h along the coast during landfall.
Flooding: Low-lying areas at risk of inundation and road disruptions.
Power Outages: Possible due to tree falls and damaged lines.
🌏 Why It Matters
The Bay of Bengal region accounts for over 75% of India’s cyclonic activity. Cyclone Montha’s formation comes amid rising sea temperatures linked to climate change. The event is expected to test Andhra’s coastal resilience and disaster response systems.
Experts say effective early warnings and timely evacuations can significantly reduce casualties and economic loss.
