Over the past few years, CNN-News18 has done numerous campaigns and stories like #WhythesePotholes?, Operation Taxi, #DrLabLooters amongst others highlighting issues that impact viewers directly. Carrying forward this legacy, the channel unravelled the ugly reality of mega sales on popular e-commerce websites. In the mega expose #OnlineFakeBazaar, the channel found that spurious manufacturers and counterfeit sellers are making hay using loopholes in the Information Technology Act. Meanwhile, online retailers are shrugging off responsibility by claiming to be intermediaries.
The investigation revealed that more than 60% of the sports goods available on major e-commerce portals are counterfeit. In the case of apparels, at least 40% of the listings are by duplicate manufacturers. In the special expose, the channel’s team conducted a raid in the Brahmpuri area of Meerut and a large number of fake products which were being sold on popular e-commerce websites were recovered.
Within few minutes of the expose being aired, Consumer Affairs Minister, Ram Vilas Paswan reacted and promised strict action against the guilty parties.
