BEIJING, Jan. 11, 2026
China’s state-owned defense contractor Norinco has provided new details on its Hurricane 3000 high-power microwave (HPM) weapon system, designed to counter small drones and drone swarms.
The truck-mounted system emits directed microwave energy to disrupt or destroy the electronic components of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), rendering them inoperable without explosions or debris.
According to Norinco representatives, the Hurricane 3000 has an effective range exceeding 3 kilometers against light and small drones, allowing it to handle entire swarms simultaneously. The system integrates radar for detection, electro-optical sensors for targeting, and a high-power microwave emitter for engagement.
Unlike traditional missile or gun-based defenses, the Hurricane 3000 requires no ammunition and can operate continuously as long as power is available, potentially reducing operational costs.
The weapon was first unveiled at the Zhuhai Airshow in November 2024 and publicly displayed during China’s military parade in September 2025.
Norinco states that the system’s range surpasses comparable U.S. systems, such as the Leonidas HPM weapon, which has a reported range of up to 2 kilometers.
The Hurricane 3000 is intended to operate independently or as part of a layered air defense network, alongside lasers, missiles, and other countermeasures.
