Chirmiri (Chhattisgarh):
A massive explosion rocked the Chirmiri open-cast coal mine in Chhattisgarh’s MCB district, leaving 10 workers injured, including two in critical condition. The powerful blast occurred while loading gunpowder inside the mine, causing panic in the area.
According to officials, four of the injured are contract laborers, while six are employees of SECL (South Eastern Coalfields Limited). The incident took place under the Chirmiri police station area, and rescue operations were launched immediately after the blast.
Eyewitnesses reported that the explosion was so intense that a gunpowder vehicle and another nearby vehicle were completely destroyed.
Blast Occurred During Gunpowder Loading Operation
Preliminary reports suggest that the accident happened during the loading of gunpowder into the mine. The sudden explosion caused a massive collapse of debris, burying several workers under mud and stones.
All the injured were quickly shifted to the Regional Hospital in Godripara, where they are undergoing treatment. Among the victims are two women workers, both of whom suffered multiple injuries.
Local Administration and Officials at the Scene
Upon receiving news of the incident, Chirmiri Municipal Corporation Mayor Ram Naresh Rai and SECL officials rushed to the hospital to check on the injured workers. A large number of local residents gathered at the hospital premises as news of the explosion spread across the region.
Officials are conducting an initial investigation into the cause of the explosion. Early indications point to improper handling or malfunction during the gunpowder loading process, though the exact reason will be confirmed after a detailed probe.
Damage to Vehicles and Property
The impact of the explosion also damaged multiple vehicles parked near the open-cast mine. Heavy smoke and flying debris were seen immediately after the blast, triggering fear among nearby workers.
Authorities have cordoned off the area and are ensuring that rescue and recovery operations continue until all sections of the mine are declared safe.
