Bondi Beach Hanukkah Shooting Declared Terror Attack; At Least 12 Killed in Sydney Tragedy

Sydney, Australia , December 15, 2025 : A devastating mass shooting at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach during a Hanukkah celebration has been officially declared a terrorist attack, leaving at least 12 people dead—with some reports placing the toll as high as 15—and multiple others injured, authorities confirmed on December 15.

The attack occurred late on December 14, during the community event “Chanukah by the Sea,” where families and attendees had gathered to mark the Jewish festival. Two gunmen opened fire on the crowd, triggering panic along the beachfront. One of the attackers was overpowered by a bystander, identified as Ahmad El Ahmed, who ambushed and tackled the shooter, preventing further casualties. His actions were later praised by officials as courageous and lifesaving.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited the scene on December 15 and condemned the violence as an act of terrorism targeting the Jewish community, vowing a full investigation and enhanced protections for public gatherings. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns echoed the condemnation, commending the bravery of the bystander and assuring the public that authorities are pursuing all leads.

Police have identified one of the suspected shooters as Naveed Akram. Investigators are examining motives, possible accomplices, and any links to extremist networks. Security has been tightened nationwide, particularly around religious sites and holiday events, amid heightened concerns during the festive season.

The incident has sparked global outrage and renewed calls for vigilance against hate-driven violence. Community leaders urged unity and resilience, while officials emphasized that the attack would not deter Australians from exercising their freedoms or celebrating their faiths.
