A new political controversy has erupted in West Bengal after BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar stated that India should not have “barbed wire fences” along its border with Bangladesh. His remarks, made during a public event, have drawn sharp criticism from within the BJP and across opposition benches.
According to reports, Sarkar emphasized cultural and familial ties between communities across the Indo-Bangladesh border, saying that fences “separate hearts.” However, his comment has triggered a massive backlash, especially given recent discussions on border security and illegal migration.
BJP leaders in Bengal have distanced themselves from the remark, calling it “personal opinion,” while Trinamool Congress and Left leaders accused the MP of “undermining national security.”
The controversy comes at a time when the Centre has been tightening surveillance along the border using drones and smart fencing.
