India edges closer to the playoffs in the Billie Jean King Cup 2025 after a thrilling 2-1 victory over Chinese Taipei, powered by rising stars Vaidehi Chaudhary and Shrivalli Bhamidipati.
Chennai, April 11: Team India continued their dream run at the Billie Jean King Cup Asia-Oceania Group I 2025 by securing their third consecutive win, this time against Chinese Taipei, on Friday. The win pushes India to second place on the points table, putting them in strong contention for a playoff berth.
🎾 Vaidehi Gives India an Early Edge
In the opening singles, Vaidehi Chaudhary delivered yet another composed and gritty performance against Feng En Lin, defeating her 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. The two-hour-nine-minute battle tested Vaidehi’s nerves, but she held strong to put India ahead 1-0 and maintain her unbeaten streak in the tournament.
🏆 Shrivalli Remains Unstoppable
The momentum continued in the second match, as Shrivalli Bhamidipati locked horns with the experienced Joanna Garland, ranked 207 in the world. Shrivalli, currently ranked 304, fought back in an intense match, winning 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). This marked her fourth consecutive singles win, showcasing her rise as a key player for Indian women’s tennis.
🤝 Doubles Defeat, But Overall Win Secured
Despite clinching both singles matches, the Indian duo of Ankita Raina and Prarthana Thombare fell short in the doubles tie. Chinese Taipei’s Yi Tsen Cho and Fang-Hsin Wu outplayed the Indians 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 in a super tie-break.
India won the tie 2-1 overall and now sits just one step away from playoff qualification. The decisive match will be against Republic of Korea on Saturday.
